The partnership Huckson and Hutchison, Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors practiced in Hobart from 1876 to 1914. Initially Robert Huckson, Architect and Builder, together with his son-in-law, Robert Hutchison, transferred operations from Adelaide to Bellerive and Hobart in 1882/3.
Robert Hutchison’s son, Herman, served his articles with Huckson and Hutchison and after Huckson retired around 1900, joined his father as a junior partner. Robert died on 13 October 1907 and the firm was continued by Herman under its old style until 1914.
Bernard Ridley Walker became Chief Draftsman with Huckson and Hutchison from 1908 to April 1911. In 1915 he and Herman entered the partnership Hutchison and Walker, Architects, Engineers and Surveyors at 115 Macquarie Street, Hobart. Herman’s work for the Hobart Marine Board was excluded from the partnership. Previously, Bernard had been articled to Alan C Walker (no relation) of Walker and Salier from 1903 to 1906 and continued as an architectural draughtsman with that firm until 1908 when he moved to Huckson and Hutchison. He worked in England from May 1911 to January 1913 when he returned to Hobart to set up a sole architectural practice for about two years before joining Herman as an architect in the above partnership. He enlisted in the Third General Hospital Corp from April 1917 to November 1919 leaving Herman to carry on alone.
Herman died on 5 March 1949 and the firm finally ceased practice after the retirement of Bernard in 1955.
